COMFORT HOTEL GRAND CENTRAL
Comfort Hotel Grand Central occupies one of Oslo’s most central and distinguished buildings: the Østbanehallen railway hall.
With an interior design that is grounded both in the grand history of the building and in a laid-back utilitarian aesthetic, the building’s 170 rooms are furnished in a spare, urban style highlighted with lived-in, heirloom elements.
A STATION OF THE LIMINAL
Commissioned specifically for Comfort Grand Central, the art concept “A Station of the Liminal” comprises a series of artistic themes integrated into the hotel’s interior. Artwork appears in rooms, bathrooms, elevators, windows, and on signs and room numbers.
TECHNIQUES
A combination of digital and manual methods was used. Two large murals were painted by hand in special guest suites. All signage throughout the building was produced using a combination of collage, stamping, stenciled spray paint and freehand graffiti.
LIMINALITY
“A Station of the Liminal” derives its theme of liminality from the context from the Østbanehallen railway hall itself — in both it’s original and it’s updated purpose — as a nexus, rather than as a place of actual departure or arrival. A short documentary about the project, by filmmaker Michael Stöen, reveals the origins of the idea and presents a closer look at the work.
